The East Coast is the holiday destination for Tasmanians with its many pristine beaches and friendly tourist towns.
Tasmania’s East Coast is one of the finest coastal regions in all of Australia with a unique character and charm. The area is home to the beautiful Bay of Fires, one of the Lonely Planet’s top 10 regions to visit in all the world. The spectacular landscapes, long white sandy beaches, and historic towns with their luxury accommodation and fresh seafood offer a wonderful holiday experience.
The East Coast has a large number of attractions and places to go. The Bay of Fires has pristine white sand beaches you can have entirely to yourself. A number of national parks are spread along the coastal region with miles of trails to explore, including the world-class Freycinet National Park at Coles Bay with its pink granite mountain peaks. Coles Bay is a favourite holiday destination and with its camping and hiking. Wineglass Bay is easily reached on foot from Coles Bay and the Hazards, a mountain range, can be seen from any of the coastal foreshores around the bay.
The two largest towns on the East Coast are Bicheno and St Helens - both busy fishing ports. Apart from the wonderful beaches, the area is famous for sea game fishing, and there are some great sites for scuba divers. Inland there are temperate rainforests, orchards and pastoral farms. The East Coast is also rich in heritage from the boom days of tin mining and there are plenty of historic sites to explore.
